What does it take to build AI that not only speaks Vietnamese but also understands the cultural nuances and local context? This was the core question our CTO, Chuong Nguyen, explored during an exciting workshop at Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) in Ho Chi Minh City.
Held under the title “Building Localized and Application-Specific Large Language Models,” the session brought together over 50 lecturers and students for a high-energy exchange on the future of AI in Vietnam.
Why TDTU?
As one of Vietnam’s top-ranked institutions—ranked #253 globally by U.S. News & World Report—TDTU is known for its forward-thinking approach and strong emphasis on technology and research. We were honored to be welcomed by their vibrant academic community, ready to tackle real-world AI challenges.
Key Takeaways from the Workshop
The Challenge: Data Scarcity in Vietnamese NLP
Building a truly localized AI model for Vietnamese involves overcoming a major hurdle: the lack of high-quality, large-scale Vietnamese datasets. Unlike English or Chinese, Vietnamese resources for NLP (Natural Language Processing) are limited, making model training significantly more difficult.
The Opportunity: Post-Training for Local Impact
Mr. Chuong shared insights from our work at AI Hay, a platform designed to serve 100 million Vietnamese users. One key approach is fine-tuning large language models post-training using localized prompts, domain-specific data, and cultural feedback loops. These methods unlock new use cases for generative AI in Vietnam—from education and healthcare to business automation.
Building Vietnam’s AI Ecosystem—Together
Our time at TDTU left us deeply inspired by the curiosity, technical depth, and creativity of both students and faculty. We’re thrilled to explore future collaborations with TDTU and other institutions to strengthen Vietnam’s position in the global AI landscape.
